MonologueSlam Leicester Winners!
We launched our debut Leicester MonologueSlam at the majestic Curve on Wednesday 8 June and what a night! On our industry judging panel were artistic directors Nikolai Foster (Curve), Giles Croft (Nottingham Playhouse) and James Dacre (Royal & Derngate), in addition to agent Chris Davis (Chris David Management Ltd) and actress Nita Mistry.
Dean Smith (Last Tango in Halifax) was the host with the most and we had laughs aplenty with special guest comedian Jack Campbell as well as pumping tracks from DJ Kellz taking full advantage of the Curve’s sound system!
The Youth Round began our night and Harriet Craddick won with a Nick Teed piece, Vicious Circle. The judges decided James Fisher and Masterclass winner Victoria Yates both deserved the Special Mention, with James performing Chatroom by Edna Walsh, and Victoria’s piece We Happy Few by Imogen Stubbs.
In the One Minute Round, homegrown talent Kieran Vyas smashed it winning with Philip Ridley’s Mercury Fur, while Katie Burchett was awarded the Special Mention by the judges for her wonderful performance of Pandas by Rona Munro.
The heavyweight Three Minute round also held very impressive talent, with Masterclass Winner Emily Dilworth earning the Special Mention with Venus in Fur by David Ives. A second Masterclass Winner, Frances Pooley, gave an outstanding performance from Shakespeare’s Hamlet to win this round and will go on to represent Leicester in the annual national final in London in December.
The Golden Ticket winner was Grace Lavender who stepped up to the plate and grabbed the opportunity to get on stage at Curve when picked on the night.
Very well done to all involved, the competition was fierce and the monologues were very interesting choices to boot. A great night was had by all and it was a fantastic launch for the Leicester MonologueSlam!
