MonologueSlam Performer On Securing An Agent At The Slam
MonologueSlam Manchester performer Lionelle Nsarhaza shared her experience of performing at 53two in June and how the slam has helped her career so far.
How did you come hear about Monologue Slam?
During the summer of 2017 I was fortunate enough to hear about some last-minute audition slots that had opened up for the MonologueSlam in Manchester.
I had previously heard of the slam and although it sounds like a great opportunity to get my face out there and elevate myself in my career. I felt under qualified so I never applied, however this time round however I took the chance and applied. It’s safe to say I am very grateful for such a decision.
How did you find the audition process?
I felt very welcome during the first audition the panel was lovely and understanding. At the end of the day we were told that if unsuccessful we should consider the masterclass because two people from that would be picked to advance to the final round. I felt that the masterclass was something I had to do as I didn’t feel the monologue I had chosen for the audition was right for the slam.
How was the masterclass?
For the masterclass, I changed my monologue. I had a lovely day and got a lot from the class so much so that it was no longer about making it into the slam but instead learning as much as possible. I was lucky enough however to have been one of the people chosen to advance into the MonologueSlam.
What was the environment like at MonologueSlam?
The day of MonologueSlam was an amazing experience. The atmosphere was full of excitement. The judges and the organisers were warm and welcoming, I had a so much fun. Although the slam was a competition, it really didn’t feel like that.
Did performing in the Slam benefit you and your career?
My main aim for the MonologueSlam was to get the attention of an agent so that I could possibly get representation. I am excited to say that I was chosen as a ‘Special Mention’ at the end of the night and as a result not only did I receive a Spotlight goodie bag, I got approached by two agents which was more than what I wanted.
To sum up, what would you say about your overall experience of MonologueSlam?
I started the experience being unsure of myself and without any representation. Now I am happy to say that I not only would more than recommend the monologue slam to anyone who is looking to move forward in their career, but I am also now officially represented by an agent who is perfect for me. So, I would like to say a big thank you for the Manchester MonologueSlam for making that happen.
