National Champion Announced!
It was the biggest event of the MonologueSlam UK year last night, with the National Final taking place at the wonderful Theatre Royal Stratford East.
Our performers included all the winners of 2017’s MonologueSlams from all over the UK (and Los Angeles!), along with a handful picked from our highly competitive auditions. The standard was incredibly high and it was a tough one for our judging panel!
The panel included agents Michael Ford (Hatch Talent) and Sarah Spahovic (ARG Talent Agency), as well as manager Alison Buck (Bohemia Group), casting directors Catherine Willis and Nicky Bligh, and for the first time, the new Artistic Director of Theatre Royal Stratford East, Nadia Fall.
Our Winners: Alex Uzoka (Youth Round), Josh Barrow (1 Minute Round and National Champion!), Jade-Marie Joseph (3 Minute Round).
Alex Uzoka was the chosen winner of the Youth Round for his performance of ‘Keepers of Infinite Space’ by Omar El-Khairy. Alex is 17 and had auditioned several times for MonologueSlam UK before he was successful earlier this year and went on to win his heat! His advice to actors thinking of doing the show was to keep trying! Josh Barrow won the one minute round for with a self penned piece, ‘Hotstepper’. Josh got through to the show from the auditions, so well done for such a gret performance! Jade-Marie Joseph (October London Winner) won the three minute round with the monologue ‘Den of Thieves’ by Stephen Adley-Gurgis.
The judges had an incredibly tough decision to make in selecting winners and awarded special mentions for each round.
(From left to right, Ruby Richards (Youth Round), Eleanor Booth (One Minute Round), Stanley Browne (Three Minute Round).
Ruby Richards, who was representing the West Midlands after her win at Birmingham REP in November, was awarded a Special Mention in the Youth Round for ‘Child of War’. Eleanor Booth, flying the flag for Manchester, got recognised for her performance of ‘Skitch’ (which she wrote herself), in the 1 Minute Round and Stanley Browne‘s performance of ‘Knock Knock’ by Daniel Beatty was picked out by the judges in the 3 Minute Round.
