Spring 2017 London Winners!
Last night at the beautiful Theatre Royal Stratford East was the first MonologueSlam UK show of the year and what a stonking show it was! On the judging panel we had the Royal Court’s Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone, Aileen McEwan, of Hatton McEwan Penford, agent Hugo Harrison at Williamson & Holmes and casting directors Sophie Holland and Coralie Rose.
Our Youth Round winner was Joy Adeogun performing a piece by Sharman Macdonald and with a monologue by Bola Agbaje, Emmanuel Akinbami earned the judges Special Mention in this round. Essay Kidane hit the time limit and was buzzed before the end of his monologue but that was definitely time enough to show his impressive skills and he was awarded the 1 Minute Round Special Mention by the judges. Nichola Maisie Taylor won this category with her smashing performance of The House That Will Not Stand by Marcus Gardley.
The second half was kicked off by Golden Ticket winner Louise Bond who had in fact taken part in our MonologueSlam in LA last year!
In the 3 Minute Round it was Tom Dawze who bagged the Special Mention, with his piece from Don Juan In Soho by Patrick Marber. The winner of the heavyweight round with an edgy piece, White Minority by Nadia Fall, was Samson Cox-Vinell, who also named Overall Winner and will be invited to perform in the Winners Edition MonologueSlam at the end of the year.
The night was hosted by the wonderful Dean Smith (Last Tango in Halifax) our regional host, while our London host Chizzy Akudolu was engaged on-set for Holby.
Shoot From the Hip had us in stitches with their fast-paced improv and DJ Samuel played some cracking tracks which even lead to a tweeted declaration of love!
Our special guest was Ishod who treated us to a couple of his wonderful tracks and their poignant meaning for him while the judges deliberated.
All the winners receive goody bags from our wonderful supporters at Spotlight and we are also sponsored by Equity.
